ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I build a space, layer by layer, hinting at noirish mystery, seducing with beautiful and disquieting juxtapositions. I choose black and white collage as my expression, using found images and those I capture myself. I like the starkness of the palette contrasted with the complexity of the theme. Under that, I layer anecdotes, rumors, secrets – a form of narrative realism. One drifts down through the layers to find the whispered cries, the strange stifled sounds that beckon.
Each collage is hand crafted with archival materials and methods. Both ‘The Ecclesiastical Circus’ and ‘Haunted Sanctuaries’ draw their inspiration from spiritual centers – homes, schools, religious institutions – created to keep us safe; a trust too often betrayed. ‘Out of Dreams Comes…’ captures the disturbed visions that visit us as we sleep. They are a kaleidoscope of images, incoherent, menacing, tender, hopeful.
